Belize Fishing Guide
Fishing in Belize:
Species, Seasons, and Where to Go
A practical guide to fishing in Belize: the main species, best seasons by target, and how to choose between San Pedro, Placencia, and Caye Caulker.
Three Distinct Fisheries in One Country
Fly fishing on the flats
targets permit, bonefish, and tarpon in water shallow enough to sight-fish from a skiff or on foot. It is technical and visual, and demands accuracy. This is what draws most serious visiting anglers to Belize.
Offshore fishing
runs out of deeper-water bases, primarily Placencia. Sailfish, marlin, wahoo, and dorado are the targets: heavy tackle, long runs, high action.
Reef fishing
is the most accessible option, bottom fishing along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef for snapper, grouper, and barracuda. Reliable action without the technical demands of the flats.
The Species Worth Planning a Trip Around
Belize's range of species is what makes it unusual as a destination. Serious flats anglers, big-game hunters, and casual reef fishermen can all find exactly what they came for, often within the same trip.
On the Flats
Bonefish are the most consistent target on Belizean flats. They move in schools across shallow sand and grass, feeding on crabs and shrimp. They run hard, spook easily, and are the most reliable species for first-time flats anglers.
Permit occupy the same flats but are harder to locate and significantly harder to catch. They are selective feeders and among the most technically demanding saltwater fly fishing targets anywhere. The permit flats around Ambergris Caye and the southern atolls are some of the most productive in the Caribbean.
Tarpon are present in the lagoons year-round and concentrate in large numbers during the spring migration. Hooking a 100-pound fish in 18 inches of water is a different category of experience.
Landing all three in a single day is the Belize Grand Slam: bonefish, permit, and tarpon. It is genuinely achievable here, and some of the best flats for attempting it are a short run from San Pedro. Learn more about what a fly fishing day on the flats actually looks like.
Offshore
Sailfish are the primary draw out of Placencia, with the strongest runs from November through March. Blue marlin and white marlin are also present. Wahoo peak in winter but are catchable year-round, and dorado are reliable near weed lines from spring onward. See our full guide to deep sea fishing in Belize.
On the Reef
Mutton snapper, cubera snapper, and yellowtail snapper are the main reef targets, along with grouper and barracuda. Reef fishing does not require technical casting, and it produces consistently. A good day on the reef is not a consolation prize.

When to Go, by Species
There is no single best month to fish Belize. The right timing depends entirely on what you're chasing.
| Species | Peak Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bonefish | October – April | Year-round; most consistent in cooler months |
| Permit | March – September | Disrupted by winter cold fronts; best on calm days |
| Tarpon | April – June | Migration peak; lagoon fish available year-round |
| Sailfish | November – March | Out of Placencia; best during cooler water temps |
| Wahoo | November – February | Year-round offshore; winter peak |
| Dorado | Year-round | Best near weed lines from spring onward |
| Snapper / Reef | Year-round | No strong seasonal peak; reliable throughout |
Winter fronts push through from December to February and can shut down flats conditions around Ambergris Caye for several days at a time. If permit or bonefish are your primary target, build flexibility into your schedule.
Which Destination Fits Your Goals
San Pedro (Ambergris Caye)
is the starting point for fly fishing on the flats. The productive permit and bonefish flats north and south of the island, combined with fast access to the reef, make it the most versatile base in the country. It is also the most accessible: frequent water taxis from Belize City and a 15-minute domestic flight.
Explore San PedroPlacencia
is the offshore base. The drop-offs south of the peninsula produce the best sailfish and marlin fishing in Belize. Fly fishing is available, but this is not why anglers make the trip here. Placencia is more remote: a 45-minute domestic flight or a long drive from Belize City.
Explore PlacenciaCaye Caulker
suits casual reef fishing in a relaxed setting. Charter infrastructure is limited compared to San Pedro. It is not the right base for serious flats fishing or offshore runs.
Explore Caye CaulkerWhat a Guided Day on the Water Looks Like
Flats charters out of San Pedro typically launch at or before sunrise to catch the best tidal window. Conditions on the flats shift through the day as water clarity and fish behavior change with the tide. A knowledgeable guide reads these windows and positions accordingly. You are not simply covering water; you are waiting for the right combination of light, tide, and fish movement.
Offshore days out of Placencia run longer, typically eight to ten hours, covering ground in search of bait activity and weed lines.
In both cases, you fish with a single guide or captain. No shared boat, no strangers. Tackle and licensing are handled by the operator. Belize requires a fishing license for visiting anglers, arranged as part of the charter.
Bring polarized sunglasses. They are not optional on the flats.
